About Judith

SPECIALIST SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST

Judith Stephenson

I am passionate about supporting children and young people to be able to communicate. Honestly this passion has continued to grow the longer I work as a Speech and Language Therapist.

I trained and graduated as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2008 in Northern Ireland. After spending one of my university placements in Kent, I applied for a job here. My intention was to stay for one to two years, gain some experience and then go back home. However, here I am almost fourteen years later still very much loving my work as a Speech and Language Therapist in beautiful Kent. I am now married with three little girls between the ages of two and six who keep me ‘on my toes’ every single day!

I am passionate about supporting children and young people to be able to communicate. Honestly this passion has continued to grow the longer I work as a Speech and Language Therapist. I take my work very seriously and treat every client both in the NHS and privately as a valued individual and will do my best to listen, understand and hear the point of view of any family that I am working with.

I have worked across a range of settings in my work so far. This has involved supporting children with speech, language and communication needs in mainstream primary and secondary schools, running Language Enrichment Groups, working in a specialist Language Unit, being employed directly by a Special School and supporting clients and their families through private practice. I have supported clients with a range of difficulties related to speech and language; children who stammer, children with specific receptive and expressive language difficulties, children with speech production difficulties and children on the Autism Spectrum. I have specialised in supporting children and young people on the Autism Spectrum and I currently work within the NHS as part of an ASD diagnostic multidisciplinary team. I also have a wealth of experience in working at an individual and whole school level supporting secondary aged pupils with ASD. This has been both in mainstream and specialist secondary schools. Within my work in schools, I have delivered one to one therapy, small group work and whole staff training sessions. I always build fantastic relationships with school staff which enables therapy to be embedded within the child’s education. As part of my role in a Medway Special School I was promoted to Head of Therapy and was a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team. This enabled me to develop positive practices for speech, language and communication at a strategic level across the school.

I also have a keen interest in research and in 2016 graduated with a Masters in Interprofessional Health and Social Care and as part of this carried out some action research on collaborative working between different therapy providers in a Secondary School. Since starting a family in 2016 my interest in research has been on hold as I have been navigating the world of sleepless nights, toddlerhood and all the adventures of being a family of five. However, as my girls grow this is an interest that I am keen to pursue!

I have been seeing clients through The Barn since Summer 2021 and I am absolutely delighted to be partnering with such a passionate and inspiring group of professionals. I absolutely love being able to offer bespoke therapy sessions for families. I find working with children on the Autism Spectrum the approach needs to be so uniquely tailored to their specific areas of interest and working privately allows me to design the therapy package which exactly suits a child. I am also always at the end of the phone and happy to talk through the therapy approach with parents at any time. I look forward to working with you and your child.
